The Songster Brigade is the church choir in the Salvation Army.
Grimsby Citadel Songsters are a very active group.
Every Sunday they provide christian music in the meetings at the Citadel every Sunday. They also give programmes at residential homes for the elderly and other churches in the area.
The brigade also have the opportunity to witness to the truth of the gospel away from home, when they lead 'special' weekends at other Salvation Army centres. The latest of these trips was to Swadlincote Corps in Derbyshire in October 1999. It proved to be a great weekend for the songsters, whose spirits couldn't be dampened even when the bus ran out of fuel on the way home!
Whilst the brigade strive to maintain a high standard musically our purpose is to bring those who hear us into a relationship with God and to praise his name in song. On Tuesday 20th November 2001 there was no songster practice. Instead the brigade joined with the Yarborough Ladies Choir in a festival of music. This raised £185 for the St. Andrew's Children's Hospice in Grimsby. The songsters would like to say thank you to those who supported the event. In the Spring of 2002 we hosted concerts by The Humberston Singers and The Grimsby & Cleethorpes Orpheus Male Voice Choir.
Both events were highly successful occassions.
In 2003 the songsters undertook a specialing weekend at Shaw Citadel Corps, provided a programme for a local PROBUS club and held a very special songster/reunion weekend which was attended by around 80 songsters from around the region and a number of former songsters of the corps. We were delighted to have Bandmaster Andrew Mackereth as our musical leader and Majors Aubrey and Irene Draycott as our spiritual leaders for the weekend, which took place on the 1st and 2nd November.
In 2004 the songsters led Sunday meetings at Hull Icehouse and continued to support the worship at Grimsby Citadel. Our Christmas programme for 2004 featured poetry by Mags Scorey. Click on this link to see her website.
